Gauteng Department of Environment Vacancies 2026 – Chief Financial Officer & Chief Director Opportunities

The Gauteng Department of Environment is inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced professionals for senior management positions based at its Johannesburg Head Office. 1. Chief Financial Officer: Finance

Job Overview

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will provide strategic leadership for the department’s financial management systems. The role involves ensuring compliance with public sector financial legislation while guiding budgeting, expenditure control, and financial reporting processes.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric)

  • Undergraduate qualification (NQF Level 7) in Financial Management recognized by South African Qualifications Authority

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience at senior management level

  • Chartered Accountant (CA) qualification will be advantageous

  • Valid driver’s license

Key Skills and Competencies

Candidates should demonstrate:

  • Strategic leadership and financial planning

  • Programme and project management

  • Advanced financial analysis and reporting

  • People management and team leadership

  • Knowledge of public sector financial legislation and supply chain management

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparing financial statements and performance reports

  • Managing departmental revenue and budgeting processes

  • Overseeing Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) planning

  • Ensuring compliance with financial legislation including Public Finance Management Act, Treasury Regulations, and the Division of Revenue Act

  • Managing supply chain and asset management processes

  • Providing financial guidance to executive leadership

  • Managing audits, compliance reviews, and forensic investigations

  • Overseeing financial staff performance and departmental financial planning


2. Chief Director: Compliance and Enforcement

Job Overview

The Chief Director will lead the department’s compliance and enforcement programmes to ensure effective implementation of environmental legislation across Gauteng.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Matric certificate

  • Undergraduate qualification (NQF Level 7) in one of the following:

    • Law

    • Environmental Law

    • Natural Sciences

    • Related SAQA-recognized discipline

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience at senior management level in compliance or monitoring

  • Completion of the Nyukela Senior Management Pre-Entry Programme

  • Valid driver’s license

Key Skills and Competencies

The ideal candidate should demonstrate:

  • Strong knowledge of environmental legislation

  • Understanding of Environmental Impact Assessment regulations

  • Strategic leadership and programme management

  • Stakeholder coordination and engagement

  • Financial and change management skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing strategic leadership to the Compliance and Enforcement Directorate

  • Managing environmental compliance monitoring programmes

  • Enforcing environmental legislation related to:

    • Waste and pollution management

    • Air quality regulation

    • Biodiversity conservation

  • Ensuring compliance with the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act

  • Managing departmental resources including staff, finances, and assets

  • Promoting environmental law compliance across Gauteng
