National Department of Health Announces Vacancy

The South African National Department of Health has opened applications for the position of Deputy Director-General (DDG): National Health Insurance (NHI), a senior executive role based in Pretoria. The department is seeking a highly experienced leader with extensive expertise in health economics, public health, healthcare financing, and policy development.

Strategic Leadership Role

As one of the department’s most influential executive positions, the DDG: NHI will provide strategic direction for the implementation and management of South Africa’s National Health Insurance programme. The successful candidate will contribute to advancing universal health coverage and strengthening equitable access to quality healthcare services across the country.

The position offers an all-inclusive remuneration package of R1.8 million per annum and forms part of the Department of Health’s senior management structure.

Key Responsibilities

The appointed candidate will be responsible for providing leadership and oversight in the implementation of the National Health Insurance system. Key duties include:

  • Directing the rollout and coordination of NHI initiatives nationally
  • Overseeing healthcare benefit structures and provider payment mechanisms
  • Managing digital health information systems associated with the NHI Fund
  • Coordinating procurement processes for health-related goods and services
  • Developing and implementing anti-fraud and anti-corruption measures
  • Strengthening health financing systems and improving healthcare outcomes

The role requires a leader capable of driving healthcare reform while ensuring accountability, transparency, and operational excellence.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Grade 12 certificate
  • SAQA-recognised NQF Level 8 qualification in Health, Medical Sciences, Public Health, or Health Economics
  • A minimum of eight years’ experience at senior management level within health economics, health sciences, or health management
  • Extensive knowledge of health insurance policy development, monitoring, and evaluation
  • Comprehensive understanding of South Africa’s healthcare environment and National Health Insurance framework

Candidates should also possess strong communication and leadership skills, computer literacy, a valid driver’s licence, and the ability to travel extensively when required.

Recruitment Process

The Department of Health will apply employment equity principles during the recruitment process, with consideration given to race, gender, and disability representation.

  • Practical competency assessments
  • Integrity and ethical conduct evaluations
  • Senior Management Service competency testing
