The Gauteng Department of Environment has officially opened applications for its 2026–2028 Internship Programme, providing unemployed South African graduates with an opportunity to gain valuable workplace experience across environmental, administrative, and technical disciplines.
The internship programme is designed for graduates who have completed a National Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree, or Honours Degree in relevant fields. Successful candidates will be appointed on a fixed 24-month internship contract and will receive a monthly stipend of R8 174.75.
Available internship opportunities include placements within the following divisions:
- Air Quality
- Pollution & Waste Management
- Environmental Impact Management
- Environmental Policy, Planning & Coordination
- Compliance & Enforcement
- Office of the Head of Department
- Financial Management
- Organisational Development
- Information Communication Technology (ICT)
- Communications
- Graphic Design
- Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation
Most internships will be based at the department’s Head Office in Johannesburg. However, the Environmental Policy, Planning & Coordination placement will be hosted in Pretoria at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.

According to the department, interns will receive structured workplace training, exposure to practical projects, and mentorship from experienced professionals aligned with their academic background.
