Department of Traditional Affairs Vacancies 2026: Researcher and Administrative Assistant

The Department of Traditional Affairs has announced employment opportunities for 2026 at its Pretoria offices. These posts support the department’s mandate to advance research, administration, and the protection and promotion of traditional leadership institutions, including Khoi-San heritage.

Applications must be submitted by 27 February 2026. Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered.


General Application Requirements

Applicants should carefully note the following conditions:

  • Applications must be submitted on the new Z83 application form (effective 1 January 2021)

  • Only a completed Z83 form and detailed CV are required at the initial stage

  • Certified copies of qualifications and supporting documents will be requested only if shortlisted

  • Successful candidates will undergo security clearance and qualification verification

  • All shortlisted candidates must complete pre-entry assessments, including practical and integrity assessments

  • Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA (proof required when shortlisted)

Vacancy 1: Researcher

  • Reference Number: 2026/03

  • Contract: Fixed-term (linked to the Commission on Khoi-San Matters, ending 31 August 2026)

  • Location: Pretoria

  • Salary: R468,459 per annum (Level 09) + 37% in lieu of service benefits

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree (NQF Level 7) in Social Sciences, Anthropology, History, Political Studies, Public or Development Studies, Public Policy, or related fields

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in social science, anthropological, historical, or genealogical research

  • Valid driver’s licence

  • Fluency in English

  • Report writing and presentation

  • Knowledge of Khoi-San history

  • Computer literacy and effective communication

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct anthropological and historical research relating to Khoi-San community and leadership recognition applications

  • Document customary law, genealogies, and leadership succession practices

  • Support the work of the Commission on Khoi-San Matters

  • Travel extensively as required

Vacancy 2: Administrative Assistant / Committee Coordinator

  • Section: Secretariat – National House of Traditional & Khoi-San Leaders

  • Location: Pretoria

  • Salary: R228,321 per annum (Level 05)

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 certificate or equivalent

  • Certificate in Office Management or Secretarial Studies

  • A post-matric qualification will be an added advantage

  • Planning, organisation, and time management

  • Computer literacy and professional telephone etiquette

  • Integrity, honesty, and client-focused service delivery

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain filing systems, registers, and document tracking

  • Coordinate committee meetings, workshops, and public hearings

  • Prepare agendas, minutes, reports, and correspondence

  • Provide diary management support to committee chairpersons

  • Arrange travel, logistics, and manage office inventory

  • Manage telephone systems, stationery, and office equipment
