Department of Small Business Development Announces Vacancy

The Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) has opened applications for the position of Director: Regional and Local Economic Development Coordination, offering a significant leadership opportunity for experienced professionals in economic and enterprise development.

Based in Pretoria, this senior management position is offered at Salary Level 13, with an annual remuneration package of R1,317,384. The appointment forms part of the department’s commitment to strengthening local economic development, supporting entrepreneurship, and enhancing the growth of small businesses and cooperatives across South Africa.

Purpose of the Position

The successful candidate will lead initiatives aimed at improving regional and local economic development coordination while ensuring effective implementation of programmes that support micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and cooperatives.

Key Responsibilities

The appointed Director will be responsible for:

  • Coordinating local economic development programmes in partnership with municipalities and provincial governments.
  • Supporting municipalities through Integrated Development Plans (IDPs) to advance economic development priorities.
  • Driving enterprise development initiatives that contribute to economic growth and employment creation.
  • Providing strategic and technical guidance during the implementation of economic development frameworks.
  • Monitoring and overseeing small business development programmes across districts and municipalities.
  • Facilitating access to financial and non-financial support services for MSMEs and cooperatives.
  • Managing directorate resources to ensure efficient service delivery and programme execution.
  • Building relationships with stakeholders and presenting strategic information to support policy and decision-making processes.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must possess:

  • A Senior Certificate (Matric).
  • An NQF Level 7 undergraduate qualification in Economics, Finance, Development Studies, or a related SAQA-recognised field.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience at middle or senior management level within regional economic development or enterprise development environments.

Successful candidates will also be required to complete the compulsory Senior Management Service (SMS) Pre-Entry Programme administered by the National School of Government before appointment.

Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in:

  • Strategic leadership and management.
  • Financial management.
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Human resource management and staff development.
  • Stakeholder and customer relations.
  • Communication, presentation, and report-writing skills.
