DPSA Opens Applications for Director-General Position Until 1 June 2026

The Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) has announced the opening of applications for the prestigious position of Director-General, offering qualified and experienced professionals an opportunity to lead strategic transformation within South Africa’s public service sector.

Advertised under reference number DPSA03/2026, the position is based in Pretoria and will be offered on a five-year contract. The successful candidate will receive an all-inclusive remuneration package of R2,352,642 per annum, in addition to a 10% non-pensionable Head of Department allowance.

The Director-General will play a critical leadership role in strengthening governance, improving public administration systems, and advancing national transformation objectives within government institutions. Reporting directly to the Minister for Public Service and Administration, the appointee will oversee policy implementation, organisational performance, compliance, and intergovernmental coordination.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • A postgraduate qualification at NQF Level 8
  • Qualifications in Public Administration, Public Management, Business Administration, Law, Economic and Management Sciences, or a related field
  • A minimum of 10 years’ senior management experience
  • Proven experience in leadership, governance, and organisational transformation
  • Strong competencies in strategic management, policy development, and financial management

Additional qualifications in Labour Law or Public Law will be advantageous.

The DPSA is seeking a dynamic and visionary leader with extensive experience in public sector administration, stakeholder engagement, change management, and institutional reform.

Key Responsibilities

The successful Director-General will be responsible for:

  • Leading policy development and implementation strategies
  • Managing governance, compliance, and accountability systems
  • Supporting public service transformation initiatives
  • Enhancing organisational capacity and operational performance
  • Coordinating intergovernmental relations and strategic partnerships
  • Serving as Accounting Officer and Head of Department

The role also includes oversight of strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation frameworks, and employee performance management systems.
