Department of Electricity and Energy Announces Vacancy

The South African Department of Electricity and Energy (DEE) has officially opened applications for the position of Director-General, offering a five-year fixed-term contract with a total remuneration package exceeding R2.3 million per annum.

Advertised under reference number DEE2026/008, the position is based at the department’s head office in Pretoria and targets highly qualified professionals with extensive experience in senior public sector leadership, energy governance, and strategic administration.

Strategic Leadership Role in the Energy Sector

The Director-General will act as the accounting officer and chief administrative leader of the Department of Electricity and Energy. The successful candidate will oversee national energy programmes aimed at improving energy accessibility, strengthening energy security, and advancing South Africa’s long-term energy objectives.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing and coordinating national energy programmes and strategic projects
  • Overseeing the nuclear energy sector and ensuring compliance with international obligations
  • Supervising state-owned entities in accordance with the Companies Act
  • Driving integrated energy policies to support investment and energy stability
  • Managing international energy relations and strategic partnerships
  • Leading departmental performance management and workforce development initiatives

The department seeks an experienced leader with strong analytical, negotiation, crisis management, and governance capabilities, as well as in-depth knowledge of the energy sector and public administration.

Salary and Executive Benefits

The successful applicant will receive an all-inclusive remuneration package of R2,352,642 per annum. In addition, the appointed Head of Department (HoD) will qualify for a non-pensionable allowance equivalent to 10% of the annual package.

This role represents one of the highest-ranking executive leadership opportunities within South Africa’s public energy administration framework.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • An Honours Degree or postgraduate qualification at NQF Level 8 in Public Management, Public Administration, Economics, or relevant Energy Engineering disciplines
  • A valid Nyukela Pre-entry Certificate for Senior Management Services (SMS)
  • A valid driver’s licence
  • A minimum of 10 years’ senior management experience within the public service

A master’s degree will be considered an added advantage.

Candidates should also demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Public finance management
  • Energy legislation and policy development
  • Project finance and infrastructure oversight
  • Stakeholder and intergovernmental relations
