Deputy Director and Assistant Director Positions

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has officially announced several permanent employment opportunities for suitably qualified and experienced professionals. These vacancies are based in Pretoria and support the Department’s mandate to strengthen education research, teacher development initiatives, and financial governance systems within the public education sector.

The advertised posts include Deputy Director and Assistant Director positions across key DBE branches and directorates. Successful candidates will receive competitive remuneration packages in accordance with public service regulations and will contribute to national education policy implementation and oversight.

Available DBE Vacancies 2026

1. Deputy Director: Research Coordination, Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Reference Number: DBE/30/2025 (Two Posts)

  • Branch: Business Intelligence

  • Chief Directorate: Strategic Planning, Research Evaluation and Monitoring

  • Salary: R1 059 105 per annum

  • Location: Pretoria

Minimum Requirements:

  • Three-year post-matric qualification (NQF Level 6) recognised by SAQA

  • Minimum of four years’ experience at Assistant Director level or equivalent

  • At least two years’ experience managing evaluations in the education sector

  • Strong research, monitoring and evaluation expertise

  • Proficiency in statistical software such as R or STATA

  • Proven research and evaluation report-writing skills

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and evaluate education system policy outputs

  • Coordinate and manage large-scale research and evaluation projects

  • Support capacity building in planning, monitoring and evaluation

  • Liaise with research institutions and present findings at conferences


2. Assistant Director: Initial Teacher Education

  • Branch: Teacher Education, Human Resources and Institutional Development

  • Directorate: Initial Teacher Education

  • Salary: R582 444 per annum

  • Location: Pretoria

Minimum Requirements:

  • Three-year qualification (NQF Level 6) in Economics or Business Administration

  • Project Management as a subject

  • Minimum of three years’ experience at supervisory level

  • Experience in research and data management

  • Strong analytical, reporting and policy development skills

  • Knowledge of teacher education and higher education environments

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the implementation of the Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme

  • Assist with teacher recruitment and internship initiatives

  • Coordinate data from education and financial systems

  • Support New Teacher Induction Programme (NTIP) activities

  • Conduct institutional visits and compile monitoring reports


3. Assistant Director: Debt, Revenue and Financial Compliance

  • Reference Number: DBE/01/2026

  • Branch: Finance and Administration

  • Directorate: Financial Services

  • Salary: R468 459 per annum

  • Location: Pretoria

Minimum Requirements:

  • Three-year qualification in Accounting, Auditing or Financial Management

  • Minimum of three years’ supervisory experience

  • Knowledge of PFMA, Treasury Regulations, PPPFA and BBBEE Act

  • Experience in financial controls, auditing or compliance

  • BAS and LOGIS experience will be advantageous

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and report on revenue, debt and receivables

  • Monitor compliance with financial legislation

  • Investigate irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure

  • Support audit processes and implementation of audit outcomes

  • Strengthen internal financial controls and risk management
