Department of Water and Sanitation Announces New Employment Opportunities Nationwide

The South African Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has officially opened applications for several high-level and professional vacancies across the country, offering skilled individuals an opportunity to contribute to the development and sustainability of the nation’s water infrastructure and resource management systems.

Published under Annexure O, the vacancies span various fields including engineering, hydrology, administration, and strategic management. The department stated that all applications must be submitted online through the official eRecruitment portal before the closing date of 05 June 2026.

Senior Management Position in Pretoria

Among the advertised posts is the position of Director: Business Management, based at the Pretoria Head Office within the Infrastructure Management Branch.

The role focuses on business development, strategic planning, procurement management, and stakeholder coordination within the Construction Management Directorate. Candidates are required to hold qualifications in Business Management or Civil Engineering, coupled with at least five years of senior management experience in infrastructure delivery environments.

Applicants with an MBA or postgraduate qualification in engineering management will have an added advantage. The position offers an all-inclusive remuneration package exceeding R1.2 million per annum.

Chief Engineer Vacancy in Eastern Cape

The department is also seeking a Chief Engineer Grade A for its offices in Qonce, Eastern Cape.

This position falls under the Water and Sanitation Services Management branch and requires candidates to possess an Engineering degree and professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). A minimum of six years’ post-qualification experience is mandatory.

The successful candidate will oversee infrastructure planning, technical investigations, refurbishment projects, and provide engineering support on water services infrastructure initiatives. The salary package ranges between approximately R1.3 million and R1.5 million annually.

Opportunities for Scientists in Water Resource Management

In Pretoria, the department has advertised vacancies for Scientist Production Grade A-C positions within the Water Resource Management branch.

The department is looking for specialists in hydrology and integrated water resource studies. Applicants must hold a BSc Honours degree in Hydrology or a related discipline and must be registered with SACNASP as Professional Natural Scientists.

Key competencies include hydrological modelling, GIS systems, water quality analysis, and integrated water resource management. Successful candidates will support national water studies, compile technical reports, and engage with sector stakeholders.

Depending on qualifications and experience, the salary package ranges from R791 604 to R1.18 million per annum.

Administrative Opportunity at Pretoria Head Office

The Department has also announced an Office Manager vacancy at its Pretoria Head Office.

The successful applicant will provide operational and administrative support within the office of the Deputy Director-General. Duties include records management, procurement coordination, workshop administration, budgeting support, and office operations.

Candidates must possess qualifications in Public Administration, Governance, or Management, along with at least five years of office management experience within the public sector. The position offers a salary of R487 197 per annum.
