Vacancy: Director-General – Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (2026)

The Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME) invites suitably qualified and experienced candidates to apply for the position of Director-General: Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation. This senior management position is offered on a five-year fixed-term contract and is based in Pretoria.

Position Details

  • Salary: R2 352 642 per annum (Salary Level 16)

  • Additional Benefit: 10% non-pensionable Head of Department allowance

The remuneration package is all-inclusive and consists of a basic salary, employer pension contribution, and a flexible component structured according to individual needs.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Bachelor’s Honours Degree or Postgraduate Diploma at NQF Level 8, recognised by SAQA

  • A minimum of 10 years’ senior management experience in strategic and administrative roles

  • Proven experience in establishing and maintaining governance systems

  • Successful completion of the Executive Induction Programme (required at shortlisting stage)

  • In-depth knowledge of government planning, monitoring and evaluation systems

  • Sound understanding of public service legislation, including the PFMA, PSA, and Treasury Regulations

Key Competencies and Skills

  • Strategic leadership and executive management capability

  • Policy analysis, research and programme evaluation expertise

  • Financial management and project management proficiency

  • Ability to manage complex, multi-sector government programmes

  • Strong communication, negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills

  • Knowledge of the National Development Plan (NDP)

  • Ethical leadership, integrity and accountability

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Minister in the Presidency, the Director-General will:

  • Serve as Accounting Officer in terms of the PFMA

  • Provide strategic leadership aligned to national priorities

  • Oversee planning, monitoring and evaluation systems across government

  • Coordinate implementation of the Medium-Term Development Plan (MTDP)

  • Strengthen oversight of public sector performance and service delivery

  • Ensure sound corporate governance, financial management and risk control

  • Lead national monitoring initiatives, including the District Development Model (DDM)
