KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health Announces Senior Medical Vacancies at Harry Gwala Regional Hospital

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health has formally invited applications for senior medical specialist positions at Harry Gwala Regional Hospital. These appointments form part of the Department’s ongoing strategy to strengthen specialist healthcare services and improve clinical governance within the public health sector.

The vacancies are based in Pietermaritzburg and are targeted at experienced medical professionals in Psychiatry and Paediatrics. Competitive remuneration packages are offered in accordance with Occupational Specific Dispensation (OSD) scales. The closing date for applications is 13 March 2026.


Head Clinical Unit (Medical) Grade 1 – Psychiatry

Minimum Requirements:
Applicants must possess a Senior Certificate or National Senior Certificate, an MBChB qualification, and registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Specialist Psychiatrist. A postgraduate qualification such as FCPsych (SA), MMed, or an equivalent is required, along with a minimum of three years’ experience as a registered medical specialist in Psychiatry. Candidates must also have at least one year of management and administrative experience and hold a valid unendorsed Code EB (Code 08) driver’s licence.

Key Competencies:
The successful candidate should demonstrate strong clinical expertise in mental health services, leadership and programme development skills, experience in psychosocial rehabilitation and substance abuse management, effective resource management capabilities, teaching and training experience, as well as research and computer literacy.

Core Responsibilities:
The Head Clinical Unit will provide specialist psychiatric services in institutional and community settings, lead clinical governance initiatives, supervise and mentor healthcare professionals, oversee audits and protocol development, promote research activities, participate in hospital committees, and ensure effective resource utilisation.


Medical Specialist (Grade 1/2/3) – Paediatrics

  • Grade 1: R1 341 855 – R1 422 810 per annum

  • Grade 2: R1 531 032 – R1 623 609 per annum

  • Grade 3: R1 773 222 – R2 212 680 per annum

Essential Qualifications and Experience:
Candidates must hold an MBChB qualification, FC Paeds (SA) or an equivalent, and be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Specialist in Paediatrics (or registrar registration where applicable). Experience requirements vary according to grade level, with up to ten years’ post-registration experience required for Grade 3 positions. Foreign-qualified applicants must meet additional stipulated criteria.

Key Duties:
The successful candidate will deliver specialist paediatric services, including neonatal and child health care, supervise junior medical staff, lead clinical audits and morbidity and mortality meetings, develop and review paediatric protocols, participate in outreach services, and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate training. The role includes collaboration with the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Faculty of Health Sciences.
