Free State Department of Health Vacancies 2026: Specialist Medical Posts Available

The Free State Department of Health has announced several senior medical vacancies for 2026 across hospitals in the province. These opportunities are aimed at experienced medical specialists and sub-specialists seeking to contribute to public healthcare services while participating in academic medicine and clinical leadership.

Most posts are based at Universitas Academic Hospital, with additional positions available at Boitumelo Regional Hospital and Mofumahadi Manapo Mopeli Regional Hospital.

Available Medical Specialist Vacancies

The department is recruiting for a range of specialist and leadership positions across different medical disciplines.

Head Clinical Department – Forensic Medicine

  • Reference: H/H/2/2026

  • Location: Universitas Academic Hospital, Bloemfontein

Salary

  • Grade 1: R2 600 811 – R2 760 408 per year

  • Grade 2: R2 841 732 – R3 016 110 per year

Key Requirements

  • Appropriate qualification for registration as a Medical Specialist in Forensic Medicine

  • Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a specialist

  • Teaching and research experience

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead forensic medicine services in the province

  • Train undergraduate and postgraduate medical students

  • Conduct research and oversee clinical governance

Head Clinical Department – Family Medicine

  • Reference: H/H/3/2026

  • Location: Universitas Academic Hospital

Salary

  • Grade 1: Approximately R2.6 million per year

  • Grade 2: Up to R3.01 million per year

Responsibilities

  • Oversee family medicine services and outreach programmes

  • Provide clinical leadership within the department

  • Support training for students and registrars

  • Participate in research and academic activities

Head Clinical Unit – Obstetrics and Gynaecology (2 Posts)

  • Reference: H/H/3/2026

  • Location: Universitas Academic Hospital

  • Salary: Up to R2.49 million per year

Responsibilities

  • Manage obstetrics and gynaecology clinical services

  • Supervise junior doctors and registrars

  • Lead clinical governance initiatives

  • Provide specialist care for high-risk patients

Head Clinical Unit – Orthopaedics (2 Posts)

  • Reference: H/H/4/2026

  • Location: Boitumelo Regional Hospital, Kroonstad

  • Salary: Up to R2.49 million per year

Key Duties

  • Manage orthopaedic services in the hospital

  • Provide specialised clinical care

  • Train junior staff and medical students

  • Strengthen patient care quality and safety standards

Medical Sub-Specialist Vacancies

Additional sub-specialist positions are also available in several disciplines.

Paediatrics Development Specialist

  • Salary: Up to R2.21 million per year

  • Location: Universitas Academic Hospital

  • Duties include specialised paediatric care, teaching, and research.

Paediatric Oncology Specialist

  • Salary: Up to R2.21 million per year

  • Responsible for diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancers.

Internal Medicine – Nephrology (2 Posts)

  • Management of kidney diseases, dialysis services, and transplant care.

Internal Medicine – Clinical Haematology

  • Treatment of blood disorders and oversight of specialised therapies.

Paediatric Neurology Specialist

  • Focus on neurological conditions affecting children.

Additional Medical Specialist Roles

Other available specialist positions include:

  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialist

  • Family Medicine Specialist

  • Cardiology Specialist

  • Pharmacology Specialist

  • Urology Specialist

  • Psychiatry Specialist

Salary packages for these roles range from approximately R1.34 million to over R2.21 million per year, depending on experience and grade level.

Minimum Requirements

Although requirements vary by role, applicants generally must have:

  • Matric (Grade 12)

  • Relevant medical specialist qualification

  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)

  • Relevant specialist experience

  • Strong leadership and clinical governance skills

Some positions may also require:

  • Teaching and research experience

  • Evidence of academic publications

  • Membership in professional medical organisations
