The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) invites suitably qualified and experienced candidates to apply for the position of Chief Director: Technical Infrastructure, a Senior Management Service (SMS) post within the department.

Position Details

  • Salary: R1,494,900 per annum (Level 14, all-inclusive package)

  • Location: Sunnyside, Pretoria

  • Closing Date: 09 February 2026

Role Overview

The Chief Director: Technical Infrastructure is responsible for providing strategic leadership and overall management of the Technical Infrastructure Unit. The role focuses on strengthening South Africa’s technical infrastructure framework in support of industrial development, including standards, accreditation, and metrology systems.

The position plays a critical role in advancing national industrial policy objectives and ensuring alignment with relevant legislation and governance frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Lead strategic planning, monitoring, and performance management within the Chief Directorate

  • Develop and implement technical infrastructure strategies aligned with industrial policy

  • Coordinate and oversee sectoral interventions within the Technical Infrastructure environment

  • Monitor and evaluate programmes, projects, and operational plans

  • Manage stakeholder relations at local and international levels

  • Oversee financial management, human resources, and governance compliance

  • Ensure adherence to legislation, including the Standards Act, Metrology Act, NRCS Act, and PFMA

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A qualification at NQF Level 7, as recognised by SAQA, in Science, Engineering, Commerce, or a related field

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience at a senior managerial level within a technical infrastructure environment

  • Proven experience in standards, accreditation, and metrology

  • Sound knowledge of industrial policy and regulatory frameworks

  • Demonstrated competence in stakeholder management, strategy development, and performance monitoring

  • Strong leadership, communication, research, and policy development skills

SMS Pre-Entry Requirement

Shortlisted candidates must successfully complete the Senior Management Pre-Entry Programme (Nyukela Programme) offered by the National School of Government prior to appointment.
