Vacancy Announcement: Deputy Director – Research Coordination, Monitoring and Evaluation (2026)**

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for two (2) re-advertised Deputy Director positions within the Business Intelligence Branch, Directorate: Strategic Planning, Research, Evaluation and Monitoring.

These senior management posts are intended to strengthen research, monitoring, and evaluation capacity within the Department and support evidence-based decision-making across the basic education sector.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree (NQF Level 7) or equivalent qualification recognised by SAQA

  • A minimum of four (4) years’ relevant experience at Assistant Director level or equivalent, including supervisory responsibilities

  • Proven experience in research coordination, monitoring and evaluation, and project management

  • At least two (2) years’ experience managing education-sector evaluations, including large-scale data collection and survey design

  • Sound knowledge of basic education policies and regulatory frameworks

  • Demonstrated experience as a lead author of research or evaluation reports

  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret quantitative and qualitative data

  • Proficiency in MS Office and experience using statistical software such as R or STATA

  • Ability to develop monitoring tools and deliver presentations to a range of stakeholders

Experience working with national education datasets and familiarity with current research on education system reform will be an added advantage.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be responsible for:

  • Coordinating and overseeing research, monitoring, and evaluation activities within the DBE

  • Designing and managing large-scale research and evaluation projects

  • Supporting capacity building initiatives in planning, monitoring, and evaluation

  • Liaising with research institutions and key stakeholders

  • Representing the Department at conferences, workshops, and research forums
