Department of Agriculture Vacancies 2026

The South African Department of Agriculture has announced new employment opportunities for skilled professionals seeking careers in the agricultural and scientific sectors. Scientific Technician Production Grade A – Genetic Resources

The Department is recruiting a Scientific Technician Production Grade A within the Directorate of Genetic Resources at the Roodeplaat Genebank in Pretoria.

Salary

R407 337 per annum (OSD salary package)

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must possess:

  • A Grade 12 certificate
  • A BSc degree or National Diploma in:
    • Botany
    • Agronomy
    • Horticulture
    • Agriculture or related fields
  • Registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP)
  • At least three years of post-qualification experience in agriculture, horticulture, or plant conservation

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Seed processing and storage management
  • Germination testing procedures
  • Data collection and reporting
  • Supporting conservation initiatives
  • Assisting with gene bank operations
  • Conducting agricultural and biodiversity research activities

Required Competencies

Candidates should demonstrate:

  • Strong analytical and research skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Problem-solving capabilities
  • Good organisational skills
  • A valid driver’s licence
  • Willingness to travel nationally and regionally

Agricultural Product Technician – Animal Production

The Department is also seeking a qualified Agricultural Product Technician within the Directorate of Animal Production.

Salary

R413 001 per annum (Level 8)

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must hold:

  • BSc Agric in Animal Production or Animal Science
    OR
  • BTech or Advanced Diploma in Animal Science

Additional requirements:

  • SACNASP registration
  • Minimum of two years’ relevant experience
  • Knowledge of the Animal Improvement Act, 1998

Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide technical advice on animal products and genetic material
  • Monitor import and export compliance
  • Evaluate donor animals and genetic profiles
  • Assist with animal breeding standards
  • Liaise with livestock industry stakeholders
  • Maintain databases and compile technical reports

Required Skills

Candidates should possess:

  • Strong communication skills
  • Report writing ability
  • Planning and organisational skills
  • Knowledge of livestock legislation and regulations
  • Ability to work overtime when required
