Western Cape Department of Health & Wellness Vacancies

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for a range of vacant posts across the province. Opportunities are available within medical, nursing, allied health, health intelligence, data science, and management disciplines.

Positions are based at hospitals, district health services, and provincial head offices. All appointments are made in accordance with the Department’s Employment Equity Plan and commitment to fair labour practices and service excellence.

Medical Specialist Posts

Applications are invited for Medical Specialist (Grades 1–3) positions in the following disciplines:

  • Child and Adolescent Psychiatry – Lentegeur Hospital

  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology – Mowbray Maternity Hospital

  • Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) – New Somerset Hospital

  • Nuclear Medicine – Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital

Key responsibilities include specialist clinical service delivery, leadership of multidisciplinary teams, training and supervision of junior staff, and participation in research and service development initiatives.

Remuneration packages range from approximately R1.3 million to R1.9 million per annum, depending on grade and experience.

Medical Officer and Registrar Positions

The Department is also recruiting for the following posts:

  • Medical Officers (Neonatology) – Fixed-term contract, Groote Schuur Hospital

  • Registrars in Anaesthetics – Four-year training contracts at Groote Schuur and New Somerset Hospitals

These posts offer exposure to tertiary-level clinical services, structured specialist training, and involvement in academic and research activities.

Nursing and Allied Health Opportunities

Vacancies are available for qualified nursing and allied health professionals, including:

  • Registered Counsellors – Garden Route District

  • Operational Manager Nursing (Primary Health Care) – Cape Winelands

  • Professional Nurses (Operating Theatre, Ophthalmology, Clinical Facilitator)

  • Clinical Nurse Practitioners (Primary Health Care)

  • Biokineticists – Increasing Wellness Programme

These roles focus on patient-centred care, health promotion, service coordination, staff development, and community outreach. Salary packages commence from approximately R397 000 per annum, depending on post level and experience.

Health Intelligence, Data and Programme Management

Strategic non-clinical posts include:

  • Health Data Scientist – Directorate: Health Intelligence

  • Assistant Director: Health Support (Information Management and M&E)

  • Clinical Programme Coordinator (HIV/AIDS) – West Coast District

These positions support evidence-based decision-making, monitoring and evaluation, health systems strengthening, and digital health innovation.
