Department of Tourism Opens Applications for Senior Executive Positions

The South African Department of Tourism has announced the opening of applications for two senior executive vacancies aimed at strengthening leadership, governance, and strategic development within the tourism sector and corporate management environment.

The department is inviting suitably qualified and experienced professionals to apply for the following positions:

  • Deputy Director-General: Tourism Research, Policy and International Relations
  • Deputy Director-General: Corporate Management

Both positions are based in Pretoria and offer an all-inclusive remuneration package of R1 813 182 per annum.

Deputy Director-General: Tourism Research, Policy and International Relations

This role focuses on advancing South Africa’s tourism agenda through research, policy development, international cooperation, and stakeholder engagement. The successful candidate will report directly to the Director-General and form part of the department’s strategic management team.

Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be responsible for:

  • Leading tourism research and knowledge management initiatives
  • Overseeing tourism policy and strategic development
  • Managing international tourism relations and bilateral partnerships
  • Coordinating stakeholder collaboration across the sector
  • Monitoring and evaluating departmental programmes
  • Supporting tourism diplomacy and regional integration initiatives
  • Managing governance, budgeting, performance, and risk within the branch

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must possess:

  • A SAQA-recognised NQF Level 8 postgraduate qualification in Tourism, Economics, Development Studies, or a related field
  • At least 8 years of experience at senior management level
  • Strong leadership, governance, policy, and stakeholder management capabilities
  • Knowledge of the PFMA and Treasury Regulations
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and analytical skills

A Master’s Degree or PhD will serve as an added advantage.

Deputy Director-General: Corporate Management

The department is also seeking a highly capable executive to lead its Corporate Management branch and strengthen governance systems, organisational performance, digital transformation, and human resource management.

Key Responsibilities

The appointed candidate will oversee:

  • Strategic planning and implementation systems
  • Human resource management and labour relations
  • ICT and digital transformation initiatives
  • Legal and governance support services
  • Internal controls and risk management
  • Facilities, security, and office support services
  • Service delivery improvement programmes

The role further includes managing branch budgets and ensuring compliance with government legislation and policies.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must have:

  • A SAQA-recognised NQF Level 8 qualification
  • A minimum of 8 years’ senior management experience
  • Strong expertise in governance and strategic leadership
  • Experience in corporate services and public policy
  • Skills in innovation, organisational development, and change management

Completion of the SMS Pre-Entry Programme is compulsory for both positions prior to appointment.
